Pump-to-Stokes relative intensity noise transfer and analytical modeling of mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers.
An analytical model for mid-infrared (mid-IR) silicon Raman lasers (SRLs) is developed. The relative intensity noise (RIN) transfer from the pump to the Stokes in the lasers is also investigated. The analytical model can be used as a versatile and efficient tool for analysis, design and optimization of mid-IR SRLs. It is shown that conversion efficiency of 70% is attainable and the low-frequenc...
متن کاملMid-IR Silicon Raman Lasers
Silicon is arguably the best Raman medium for the mid-wave infrared spectrum. This new technology can expand the application space of silicon photonics beyond data communication and into biochemical sensing, laser medicine, and LIDAR.
متن کاملNonlinear absorption in silicon and the prospects of mid-infrared silicon Raman lasers
1 Introduction By circumventing the problem of indirect bandgap, Raman scattering offers a path to optical amplification and lasing in silicon [1]. To create the recently demonstrated silicon Raman lasers [2, 3] nonlinear losses due to absorption by free carriers that are generated by two-photon absorption (TPA) had to be eliminated using pulsed pumping or reverse-biased carrier sweep-out. Even...
متن کاملModulation Response and Relative Intensity Noise Spectra in Quantum Cascade Lasers
Static properties, relatively intensity noise and intensity modulation response in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) studied theoretically in this paper. The present rate equations model consists of three equations for the electrons density in the conduction band and one equation for photons density in cavity length. Two equations were derived to calculate the noise and modulation response. Calcula...
متن کاملEffect of free carriers on pump-to-signal noise transfer in silicon Raman amplifiers.
We study noise transfer from pump to signal in silicon Raman amplifiers, with particular emphasis on the regimes of strong cumulative free-carrier absorption and heavy pump depletion. We calculate the relative intensity noise (RIN) transfers in copumped and counterpumped amplifiers and provide intuitive explanations for RIN peculiarities. We show that noise transfer at low frequencies may be su...
